Chief Abayomi Olajuwon Sotomiwa, Olootu Eleshinmegun family, Igbogbo, speaking with THE IMPACT on this year’s Eleshinmegun Day, said that the annual celebration is a way of sustaining the tradition of the family’s progenitor, Eleshinmegun who was a great personality in Igbogbo. According to hm, Eleshinmegun gave birth to two daughters – Omobowale and Efunbamowo, both of whom gave birth to nine children – Kasali Aluko Jaiyeola, Goke Sotomiwa, Esubiyi Sotomiwa, Feloya Sotomiwa, and Agbajelola Sotomiwa who were Omobowale’s children, while Moluyi, Ajasa Omobo, Safauratu and Abudu were children of Efunbamowo.
He added that the nine grandchildren of Eleshinmegun had a very large family which spread all over Igbogbo and beyond, hence, the need to always bring them together.

“This is a remembrance anniversary for our progenitor, and our late fathers and mothers who were sons, daughters and grandchildren of Eleshinmegun, and we have some programmes to commemorate it. We have educational, health and empowerment initiatives for the family members.
“We are using the celebration to bring family members together in order to let our young ones know themselves and things about the family.
“With the educational initiative, we are giving financial support to our sons that are doing brilliantly in their academics, while the medical outreach involved free tests and drugs as part of the family’s efforts to support good and healthy living.
“We also intend to have an empowerment programme in future for those engaging in artisanship and trade as a means of supporting them. We plan to get those that have been trained, their tools of trade as empowerment.

“Our main intention with the annual celebration is to have a one -big -united Eleshinmegun family and to sustain the family’s heritage and good work that our ancestors had done. We want the family to be pacesetter in terms of organization and development in Igbogbo Kingdom”, the head of the Eleshinmegun family said.
Mr Olugbenga Oduniyi, Chairman, Planning Committee, Eleshimegun Day, also speaking, emphasised that the purpose of the annual celebration is to unite the family.
“Eleshimegun Day is designed simply to unite the family; bring the family together in one accord, because we are large and scattered all over the world. We feel that some of our children across the world did not know themselves, and we are using this medium to bring everybody together.
“It is also to support our young ones’ education, through scholarship, and also those that are also in vocational skill, we are planning to empower them as we did last year”.

The planning committee chairman said that this year’s grand finale of the Eleshinmegun Day will be massive, with a lot of items to be given out by the family.
“Basically, the medical outreach is to give back to the society, and we are also doing that to promote our family, and sustain the name of Eleshimegun who was a wealthy and great personality during her lifetime. She was referred to as Oba Obinrin (King of women).
“At this year’s grand finale, there will be a raffle draw with a lot of items like generators, home appliances like kettles, microwaves among others to be won. There are also food items too only for those who bought the celebration’s fabric and have their tickets.
“We are also giving out bursary awards to three best students within the family that are in higher institutions. We are also supporting family members that are into vocational training”, he said.
