OPINION: The Hypocrisy in Criticizing Aregbesola’s Political Shift: A Call for Fairness and Justice

By Adeyinka Aroyewun

President Bola Tinubu and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola

In the complex landscape of Nigerian politics, alliances and allegiances often shift, reflecting the dynamic nature of democracy and the diverse interests of its stakeholders. Recently, there has been a wave of criticism directed at former Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for his decision to join a coalition party ( ADC) opposing President Bola Tinubu’s second term bid for Aso Rock in 2027. While political disagreements are natural, the manner in which Aregbesola’s move is being condemned reveals a troubling hypocrisy rooted in selective justice and unfair double standards.

The Evolution of Political Alliances

Aregbesola and Tinubu have had a long-standing political relationship, once characterized by mutual support and collaboration. However, political landscapes are rarely static. Leaders grow, strategies change, and new ideological directions emerge. Aregbesola’s decision to switch camps and align with ADC reflects a personal and political evolution rather than betrayal.
Aregbe openly became ADC acting secretary after two years of Tinubu in Aso Rock. How many people condemned the President for the abandonment suffered by Aregbe?
People worked with Tinubu in partnership as politicians, not as slaves.
The narration that the head is doing his followers a favour must STOP.
It is essential to recognize that political actors are entitled to pursue their convictions and alignments, especially in a democracy that thrives on pluralism and dissent.

The Double Standard of Justice

What is particularly disconcerting is the tendency to hold Aregbesola to an unreasonably high standard, often measuring his actions against Tinubu’s presumed virtues or political dominance. This approach is inherently flawed and unfair. Tinubu himself has faced numerous controversies, criticisms, and political rivalries. To elevate him as a moral or political yardstick—an infallible standard of justice—is not only unjust but also diminishes the complexities of Nigerian politics.

Using Tinubu as the sole measure of fairness effectively dismisses the legitimacy of other political actors and their choices. It creates a skewed narrative that equates loyalty to Tinubu with righteousness, while any deviation is branded as betrayal. Such a mindset fosters division and undermines the democratic principle that leaders and politicians should be judged based on their actions, policies, and integrity—not solely on their associations or allegiances.

The Importance of Fairness and Respect for Political Agency

Condemning Aregbesola for exercising his political agency without considering the broader context is an act of unfairness. Politicians, like all individuals, have the right to choose their paths, alliances, and priorities. Discrediting these choices based on past alliances or personal animosities is a form of politicized hypocrisy that damages Nigeria’s democratic fabric.

Furthermore, vilifying Aregbesola for shifting political camps ignores the fact that such movements are a natural part of Nigeria’s democratic evolution. Leaders must be able to adapt, reassess, and realign without fear of unwarranted backlash or moral condemnation.

The Call for Fairness and Unity

Instead of engaging in divisive rhetoric that demonizes politicians for their choices, Nigerians and political observers should advocate for fairness, dialogue, and understanding. Respect for individual agency, recognition of the fluidity of political relationships, and a refusal to use Tinubu as an infallible standard are essential for nurturing a healthy democratic environment.

In conclusion, the criticism of Aregbesola’s political realignment exposes a troubling hypocrisy—one that judges individuals based on their associations rather than their actions and integrity. Politics is inherently complex, and fairness demands that we evaluate leaders on their merits, not on selective standards rooted in personal biases or political convenience. Let us promote a culture of fairness, respect, and justice, where political differences are debates to be won on ideas, not personal vilification.

Every patriotic Nigerian should commend founders and members of the coalition for strengthening democracy in Nigerian by providing a viable opposition to the ruling party.
What if the coalition is considering Aregbe for the highest exalted position of Nigerian President? He should reject and choose to forever remain Asiwaju’s subordinate?
