LASU Appoints Imota -Born Scholar, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Anjorin, Associate Professor

Associate Prof. Abdul-Azeez Anjorin

Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adeyemi Anjorin, the immediate past Head of the Microbiology Department, Lagos State University and President of the Lagos State University Muslim Alumni (LASUMA), has been promoted as an Associate Professor of Medical Virology, Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases at the Lagos State University, Ojo.

He hails from Imota in Imota Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ikorodu Division, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria.

The scholar currently sits on the training and career development committee of the World Society for Virology, and Governing Board member for Middle East, Eurasia & Africa- Influenza Stakeholders Network (ME’NA- ISN), and Lagos State University Board of Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship.

He was promoted recently to Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Senior Collaborator of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. He is serving as an Executive Council member of the African Virologists Network, and Nigerian Young Academy (NYA).

He is the Founder/ Principal Investigator for African Infectious Disease Multidisciplinary Research and Grant (AFIDMURG); the Team Leader for Respiratory & Other Viruses Research (ROVIR), and the immediate past Head of Department of Microbiology who secured NUC full accreditation for Microbiology in 2023/24 at the Lagos State University.

Anjorin received the Global Virus Network (GVN) training scholarship for Emerging Leaders in Virology at the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine; Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore; and National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA.

He was also trained at the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC), Argonne National Laboratory, University of Chicago, Lemont, Illinois. He earned a PhD in Medical Microbiology/Virology from the College of Medicine/ Postgraduate School, University of Lagos; and a training fellowship at the Luxembourg Institute of Health WHO influenza Reference Laboratory. He had further training at the ISIRV/ Christian Medical College (CMC) Respiratory Virus School in Vellore, India; and received the INGSA Africa Science Advice Skills Development Program Training Fellowship.

The council boss also said that his promotion will continue to make the Imota-born scholar inspire others more.
