Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, Chairman, Ikorodu West LCDA.

The baby girl abandoned at the Olayinka Jimbo Street, Ipakodo in Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Ikorodu Division, Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria, is currently being attended to at the General Hospital, Ikorodu.

THE IMPACT gathered that the poor baby was taken to the hospital by a Neighbourhood officer attached to Ikorodu West LCDA on Friday.

According to report gathered by THE IMPACT, Dr Taiwo Hassan, the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer, General Hospital Ikorodu, has accepted the baby for necessary medical care.

Source told our reporter that the baby was brought in a very poor condition and is currently being kept in an incubator.

Chairman, Ikorodu West LCDA, Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju, also visited the hospital where he met with Dr Hassan to know about the baby’s condition.

In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ikorodu West Chairman, Onanuga Ayotunde Patrick, said that the Chairman appreciated the Neighbourhood personnel for rescuing the baby and the management and staff of the general hospital for the prompt medical responses.

Hon Sulaimon, who promised to bear all the medical costs of the baby’s treatment, also pledged to adopt the girl if the government gave him the approval.

“He seized the medium to appeal to our young girls/mothers to desist from such act, as no one knows what a child can become tomorrow irrespective of the present economic situation of the country”, the statement said.

In a phone chat late Thursday night with THE IMPACT, Dr Hassan said that there is always a process involved in handling abandoned babies which must be followed in every given circumstance.

“There is a process to be followed when there is a case of an abandoned baby. We usually treat such babies and certify if she or he is medically okay.

“If not, it is our responsibility to give such a baby adequate medical care until he or she is okay and, thereafter, we communicate to the police who are responsible to take over and place such in homes as they deem fit. That is the process.

“That is all that I can say right now”.
