Ikorodu West LCDA, NEMPAP Empower 305 Women With Vocational Skills

305 women drawn from the five Wards of the Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area of Ikorodu Division, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria were on Tuesday empowered with vocational skills

The 4-week intensive training facilitated through the Office of the Supervisory Councilor for Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) was in conjunction with the Necessary Measures Against Poverty And Perversity (NEMPAP) and sponsored by the Council chairman, Princess Jumoke Jimbo-Ademehin

Beneficiaries were trained in Make-up, fashion design, catering, hair dreading, shoe-making and bags, Photography and Graphics \Printing in three different youth centres within the Council Area to ensure participants have easy access to the training centre.

The graduation ceremony which took place at the Council’s hall under the Chairmanship of the Executive Chairman Hon. (Princess) Jumoke Jimbo-Ademehin had in attendance members of the Executive council and Legislative Body.

Princess Jimbo-Ademehin who stated that she sponsored the empowerment programme as part of her plan to improving the socio-economic lives of her people enjoined the graduates to ensure that they maximize the opportunities open to them through the training.

While commending the commitment and participation of the beneficiaries, she also encouraged young men to also take up useful skills that would make them contribute to the development of themselves, Ikorodu West and Lagos State at large.

In a chat with the media, the Supervising Councillor, Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Mrs Jessica Enitan-Oba, stated that the need to empower and develop young people especially women in order alleviate poverty in the society being the primary goal of her office prompted the partnership with NEMAP in training the beneficiaries

.”Going forward, we expect the beneficiaries to convert the skill acquired to wealth. Like the theme says,”Get a skill, Be a Boss” that is the message we want to send to the society’ she started.

Jessica noted further that through the exemplary effort of the Ikorodu West Chairman, some of the graduates benefited from the empowerment scheme carried out by the council recently.

”Some of them benefitted from the Empowerment scheme powered by the executive chairman, Hon. Princess Jumoke Jimbo-Ademehin recently which further fulfill the purpose of the training to lift people out of poverty, thus, contributing significantly to the Sustainable Development Goal of ending poverty in the country.

”In view of the above, we expect the beneficiaries to as well train other people. Doing so will reduce the numbers of vulnerable youths and women in our society.”

Balikis Ajikanle, one of the beneficiaries trained in Home Essentials like liquid soap, air freshener, insecticide amongst others said the training has really helped and she intend domesticating the knowledge to improve her economy status even in school.

Another participant Mrs Akinlade Teresa, in the Fashion Designing section, thanked the organisers for deeming it necessary to empower members of the party who contributed significantly to the emergence of the governor-elect, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

”I thank Ikorodu West Chairman for the laudable initiative. Considering empowering party members this early in an administration is not what electorate experience every time. I learnt how to make women caps, different types of turbans amongst others. Not all the graduates today would eventually use the skill but if substantial number proceed to train others and develop themselves, lots of families would have benefited from this humble gesture,” she said with appreciation.
