In a commendable move to give back to their department, the pioneer 400 level students of Mass Communication at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) on Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, donated a standard First Aid box and a Defibrillator to the department.
Defibrillators are life saving medical devices used to restore a normal heartbeat when a person experiences sudden cardiac arrest.
The gesture, aimed at strengthening health safety and emergency readiness by complementing existing medical facilities, was executed under the aegis of the department’s Life Skills for Media Professionals course.

Designed to be purely practical, the course trains and equips outgoing students with the safety and emergency skills necessary to navigate potentially hazardous working environments in the media industry.
To achieve this objective, the students, led by ThankGod Wekpa and other committee members, facilitated expert-led training sessions across several key sectors.
These included the LASUSTECH Directorate of Health Services, the Electrical Department, the Security Unit, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services (Odogunyan Division).

The training sessions, held at various intervals at the Kakawa Hall of the Mass Communication Department, covered critical areas such as health safety and emergency measures, electrical hazard prevention, general and data security for media practitioners, and fire prevention protocols.
According to the course’s Lead Facilitator, Dr Ade Inasa-Thomas, the initiative was necessary to complement the students’ academic curriculum. He notes that it not only exposes them to the realities of real-world working environments, but also provides the vital knowledge required to tackle life safety challenges.
While receiving the donations and presenting them to the Head of Department (HOD) in the presence of the students, Dr Inasa-Thomas explained that the contribution marks the climax of the course.

He added that it would serve as a proactive measure to help the department manage both minor and critical health emergencies that may arise among staff or students.
In his remarks, the HOD, Dr Prosper Zannu, expressed his appreciation to both the staff and students for their collaboration and commitment to the course. He reaffirmed the department’s dedication to initiating relevant, timely programmes for its students and warmly congratulated the graduands on completing their university education.
The Life Skills for Media Professionals course was managed by a team of departmental lecturers, including Dr Taiwo Okeowo, Dr Inasa-Thomas, Mrs Olayinka Idowu, and Mr Adewale Ajayi, representing the Journalism, Public Relations & Advertising (PRAD), and Broadcast sequences.
