He polled 63 votes to defeat Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who got 46 votes Senator Ali Ndume nominated Senator Godswill Akpabi, after reading the biography and was seconded by Senator Olamilekan Solomon Yayi from Ogun state. On the other hand, Senator Ishaku Abbo nominated Senator Abdul Aziz Yari as Senate President.
