After weeks of consultations and screening, another set of 19 residents of Ikorodu Constituency II in Ikorodu federal constituency, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, have regained their sight courtesy of the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun (AMA).
The successful surgical procedures was conducted as part of the second edition of the humanitarian eye-care initiative sponsored by Hon AMA, an intervention focused on providing free access to cataract treatment for people who might otherwise struggle to afford the cost of surgery.
The beneficiaries had earlier undergone consultation and comprehensive screening by specialist eye doctors to determine their medical suitability for the procedure. Following the necessary examinations and medical clearance, 19 beneficiaries proceeded to surgery and successfully had their cataract-affected eyes operated on with the development representing another major intervention to make quality healthcare more accessible to vulnerable members of the community.
AMA in his stride to bring succour to those battling eye defects, initiated free cataract surgeries for his constituents, with 15 constituents benefiting in its first edition some months back.
Speaking on the successful procedures, AMA described the intervention as more than a medical programme, stressing that restoring the sight of a cataract patient can have a profound impact on the individual’s family, livelihood and overall quality of life.
“Every successful surgery is a life transformed. We are not simply treating cataracts; we are restoring independence, dignity, confidence and hope. When someone who has struggled to see clearly can begin to see again, the impact goes far beyond the individual.”
The lawmaker further expressed appreciation to the specialist medical team, volunteers, community stakeholders and everyone who contributed to the success of the intervention.
For many elderly and low-income residents, untreated cataracts can significantly restrict mobility, livelihood opportunities and their ability to participate meaningfully in family and community activities. By removing the financial barrier to surgery, the programme seeks to ensure that poor vision does not become a permanent limitation for those who require medical intervention.
The cataract programme is part of the broader community-oriented interventions associated with Hon. (Dr.) Aro Moshood Abiodun, Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency II, through the AMA Smile Foundation.
