In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, General Hospital Ikorodu held a workshop, bringing together pregnant women, nursing mothers, and women from all walks of life to promote the importance of breastfeeding for lifelong health and development.

The programme, held under this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works” featured presentations from healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors, paediatric consultants and dietitians.

During the sessions, key messages were highlighted including: exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding with appropriate complementary foods for up to two years and beyond, which as it was emphasised, gives every infant the best possible start in life.

Medical experts also stressed that breast milk is safe, clean, and packed with nutrients, meeting an infant’s full needs in the early months and continuing to provide essential nourishment throughout the second year.

It is also stated that early initiation of breastfeeding – within 30 minutes of birth – not only protects newborns from infections and chronic diseases but also strengthens the mother-child bond and improves breastfeeding outcomes.

Participants at the event carried placards with inscriptions such as “My Boobs – the Milk factory. My Baby – the CEO”, “Boss, Pls Support the Pump. Advocating for working mothers”, “6 Months Leave, Lifetime Gain”, “No Pause to Breastfeeding”, and “U CAN do IT MUM”, to drive home the importance of breastfeeding.
