One Dead, Nine Rescued In Ikorodu Building Collapse

One of the 14 people trapped in the collapsed two-storey building along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ota-Ona, in the Ikorodu, on Tuesday has been confirmed dead.

Nine others were rescued and three others feared trapped after the building under construction came down during the annual Oro festival.

According to residents, the unfortunate incident occurred around 2pm.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu who said teams were mobilised to attend to the emergency when a distress call was received.confirmed that three people were reported trapped in the rubble when the rescue teams arrived at the scene.

“Upon arrival at 2:40 p.m., it was discovered that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed, trapping three individuals beneath the debris. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.”

“Nine male adults were rescued and treated on-site by the LASEMA Pre-hospital Care unit. Three persons were reported trapped and no death was confirmed at the time of this report,” he said.

The LASEMA team commenced search and rescue started immediately upon arrival at the scene, with safety perimeter established, while excavation of debris commenced to aid quick location of the trapped victims.

Also on the ground during the rescue operations were men of the Nigerian Police, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) among others.
