Abiru Chairs Senate Committee On Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions

The President of the Nigerian Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio has named the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA, as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions for the 10th Senate.

Abiru served as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries in the 9th National Assembly.

Senator Akpabio unveiled names of chairmen and vice-chairmen of the standing committees, after the Senate resumed from its break at 9.59pm on Monday. The session ended 10.47pm.

Senator Abiru, a retired bank Chief Executive, is an accomplished banker and astute administrator who had a sparkling career at top financial institutions spanning three decades. He rose to become an Executive Director in First Bank of Nigeria.

He was the pioneer and former Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Bank Limited.

The Senator representing the Lagos East at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, led the turnaround of erstwhile Skye Bank Plc, as Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, under a CBN-induced take-over of the Bank, in a bid to avoid its collapse and also preserve the stability of the overall Nigerian Financial System.

The President of the Senate also announced other distinguished Senators as substantive chairmen of standing committees at the Senate.

Former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan chaired the Senate Committee on Defence, Aliyu Wadada (Public Account), Shehu Kaka (Special Duties), Patrick Ndubueze (Works), and Solomon Adeola (Appropriations).

Some of the major committees named are: Sen Godiya Akwashiki (Airforce Committee), Buhari Abdul fatai (Aviation), Osita Izunaso (Capital Market), Cyril Fasuyi (Establishment), Seriake Dickson (Ecology/Climate Change), Aminu Tambuwal (Housing), Adams Oshiomhole (Interior), Jide Ipisagba (Petroleum Downstream)

Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned plenary till September 26th for its long vacation.
