2019 World Biodiversity Day: LASG Restates Commitment To Sustainable Biodiversity Management

The Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to sustainable biodiversity management through the creation of adequate awareness required for stimulating action towards the conservation of Biological Diversity and Economic Growth.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in his office to commemorate the day, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment, Mr. Abiodun Bamgboye said that biodiversity of Lagos State was an essential asset that must be sustainably managed, wisely utilised and conserved for future generations.

He noted that the United Nations had set aside the 22nd of May for the annual celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, adding that this year’s celebration focused on biodiversity as the foundation for food and health with the theme “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health”

Bamgboye observed that this year’s theme was apt as it aimed to project the importance of nature’s diversity for existence and wellbeing on earth, while also contributing to other Sustainable Development Goals.

He described Biological Diversity as “the variety of plants and animals living in an ecosystem”, saying that its importance cannot be overemphasised as it engendered the provision of food security, environmental stability, ecosystems restoration and recreational values, amongst others.

The Permanent Secretary warned that the biodiversity of Lagos State was being threatened by rapid urbanisation and connected factors, and urged stakeholders to act quickly and positively to forestall further devastation.

“These ecosystems are home to a rich variety of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals. Sadly, all these features are under serious threat of extinction from a range of causes, which include rapid urbanisation, trafficking and climate change” he stressed
