Building Collapse: LASG Sets Up 5-Man Committee To Prevent Future Occurrence

A 5-man committee has been setup by the Lagos State Government primarily to investigate the causes of the collapsed structure at Lagos Island, where many residents, including school children, were killed and injured, and make appropriate recommendations.

The investigation panel, which was inaugurated at the conference room of the Ministry of Physical Planning & Urban Development on Tuesday (yesterday), has two weeks to submit its report.

The collapsed building incident, which involved a three-storey building that housed mainly pupils of a nursery and primary school, claimed at least 20 lives while 45 others sustained varying degrees of injury.

While inaugurating the panel led by a former Permanent Secretary in Lagos State , Engr Wasiu Olokunola, the Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development, Prince Rotimi Ogunleye, stated that the committee was set up to prevent further occurrences.

Ogunleye said the panel was also to proffer remedial measures to stem further building collapse in the future, adding that the panel was also to determine the level of negligence on the part of the developer or owner and the role of the state government.

The commissioner added that the panel was to make recommendation for future efficient service delivery that would halt collapse of buildings in the state.

He also said that the recommendation of the panel would be acted upon as government was determined to stem the tide of collapsed building in the state.

The commissioner disclosed that the panel has two weeks to submit its report to the government for prompt action.

Chairman of the panel and a retired Permanent Secretary in Lagos State, Engr Wasiu Olokunola, said the panel would do a thorough job as  members are capable and versed in the task given to them.
