Civil Service Model College Wins 2nd Edition Of Waves Magazine Inter-School Quiz Competition

Civil Service Senior Model College, Igbogbo in Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, has emerged the winner of the 2nd edition of the Inter-School Quiz Competition.

The competition, which was held at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat hall, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, was organized by Waves Magazines, an Ikorodu based entertainment tabloid, for students in senior secondary schools in Ikorodu division.

About ten schools across the division participated in this year’s edition and competed in General Studies, English Language and Mathematics.

The quiz was moderated by a presenter from the Lagos Television (LTV 8), Princess Sola Kosoko, a legislative aide to the representative of the Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Mr Mojeed Sanni , wife of the publisher, Mrs Lamina and the Chief Executive Officer, Suave Records, Mr Oluwakemi Hassan.

At the end of the event, which was well-attended by eminent individuals, Civil Service Senior Model College, Igbogbo, garnered 20 points in the three subjects to emerge as winner and carted home N50,000 prize money.

Accesspoint College, Ikorodu, emerged the 1st runner-up with 18 points while HOMAT College emerged 2nd runner-up with 16 points.

The Publisher of Waves Magazines, Mr Azeez Lamina, speaking at the event, stated that the purpose of initiating the quiz competition was to give back to the society.

He added that his publishing company also intended to aid the development of youths by actively and positively engaging them.

“We are inviting you (students) to compete amongst themselves because we know that it is very challenging at your age.

“Unlike while we were growing up, there are many distractions that are adversely affecting your concentration and taking your time like phone and social media engagements.

The publisher, who stated that the students should see the acquisition of phones as privilege and notright, enjoined them to use the gadget for productive engagements.

Aside phone and social media engagements, Lamina also stated that music and dance are other factors affecting the concentration of youths nowadays.

“This generation also has to contend with music and dance invasion.

“After analyzing these challenges, we, at Waves Magazines have decided not to join the crowd of those complaining but to find a way of correcting the situation, hence, our engagements with the youths and quiz is one of the ways through which we are trying to contribute to their developments.

“The message that I want you to take home is that you must put in your effort to develop yourself. It iswhat you put into life that you will get. Life will only gives back what you put into it.

He advised participating students to “Read extra hard, pay attention to details and be focus to achieve anything extraordinary.

Hon. Adeola Banjo, Chairman, Ikorodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), also toed the publisher’s line by encouraging the students to give all their best to develop themselves.

“Life is free employer, it will only give to you what you invest in it".

He commended the management of Waves Magazines for providing the educative platform to develop the youths.

“You should be able to develop yourselves among your peers with the enormous opportunities at your disposal. Be unique and don’t follow the crowd because if you do, you’ll be lost in it. Be different”, Hon. Banjo advised.

Mayor Deen Sanwoola, an IT expert and a techy-political strategist, challenged the students to study courses that are unusual and technological based if they truly want to standout.

“You should aspire to be different and ready to study those courses that are not regular like aeronautic, neuro-surgeon, etc.

“To do this, you have to go the extra miles and do more than your peers.

“Your ability to use technology will differentiate you from the rest because we are now running an information and technologically-based economy

While also challenging them to be concerned with the process of doing things, Mayor Deen stated thatthey have to start looking for problems to solve to impact on the society.

In his own speech, Otunba Saheed Ibikunle, former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on Education Management, emphasized the need for youths to acquire skills while pursuing their academic careers.

He commended the management of Waves magazines for the initiative and also the participating students for conducting themselves in good manner throughout the quiz competition.

Aside the monetary gifts presented to the best three schools, certificates of participation were also issued to the students.
