Vandalised Asa statue

The organisers of the annual Asa festival have announced the postponement of the event originally scheduled to hold Friday, December 21, 2018, at the Ikorodu Town hall, Olubi, Ikorodu.

In a press statement issued on Thursday by the Publicity Sub-Committee of the event, it was stated that the postponement was necessitated by developments beyond its control.

The statement read thus:

“The Organiser of the yearly Asa Festival regrets to announce the postponement of this year’s edition tagged Ere Osupa 2018 and earlier billed to hold tomorrow Friday, December 21, 2018.

“While assuring the public that a new date will be announced soon as all disbursement needed to make the event a success has been done already, we appeal for the deepest understanding from all and sundry given that the most unexpected postponement was due to developments requiring us to make a sacrificial decision in the situation at hand.

“The postponement of the Lagos State government approved annual cultural events was the best we could do in the situation, and this we did, bearing in mind the inconveniences it will cause a lot of people within and outside  Ikorodu. For these, we profusely apologize.

“On behalf of the Initiator and promoter of ASA festival, the Opomulero of Ikorodu Kingdom and the Lagos Majority Leader, Hon. S.O.B AGUNBIADE, we appealed to our esteemed partners and the general public to bear with us as we all look forward to a new date. Thank you all”

Meanwhile, THE IMPACT also gathered that there was an attempt by some unknown individuals to destroy the 13 ft of Asa statue erected in commemoration of the annual Asa festival in Ikorodu.

Mr Oga Joseph, the sculptor that constructed and erected the statue doing rehabilitation work on the vandalised statue before the announcement of the postponement of this year’s Asa festival tagged, ‘Ere Osupa 2018’

We gathered that the vandalisation was discovered by the Co-chairman of the socio-cultural group and the sculptor who constructed and erected the statue, when they both visited the site on Wednesday, December 19, for a light rehabilitation work as part of the preparations for the second edition of the festival slated for Friday, December 21.

The alleged perpetrators,  according to the Co-Chairman, “cut the statue’s legs deep with saw in an attempt to pull it down, but for the solid construction of the statue by the professional sculptor, Mr Joseph Oga who is an illustrious son of Ikorodu, these evil doers would have succeeded”
