The premier College in Ikorodu, Oriwu Model Senior & Junior School, has honoured some of her students with excellence academic performance for the 2017/18 session.

 

At the well-attended and impressive ceremony held at the school hall on Thursday, February 7, 2019, the school also honored 65 of her ex-students that secured admissions into various higher institutions after graduating from the school in 2018.

 

Also honoured were staff members of the school who had distinguished themselves former students of the school who have been contributing to the development of the school.

 

The star award of the ceremony went to Miss Wuraola Ashafa who emerged the overall best students in WASSCE 2018 in Ikorodu.

 

Adewuyi Abidemi, Faruq Quadri and Oladoyin Oreoluwa emerged joint best students in Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3; Okwarobo Solomon was honoured as best students in SSS 2, while Akande Winifred was the best student in SSS I.

 

Honoured with recognition and appreciation awards for the contributions to the development of the school were Alhaji M.M. Bolarinwa, Dr Tajudeen Ogbara, Mrs L. I. Christianah I, Hon. Fathiu Salisu and Mr Mukaila Adigun.

 

Staff appreciation awards went to Mr Ogunlegan Folusho Olusoga, Mr Salau Hakeem Adelaja, Mr Raheem Adebayo Mutiu, Mrs Tanimowo Olanike Bosede and Mrs Akinsanya Folashade Abidemi.

 

Alhaja Abiodun Ogunniyi, the Principal of the Oriwu College Senior Model College, in her speech, stated that the students were being honoured not only for their academic performances but also for the exemplary behaviors.

“We are honouring our students for having done the school proud both in their academic performance and moral behaviors.

 

She acknowledged the contributions of the old students of the school for their efforts in developing their Alma Mata.

 

“For our loving and benevolent old students, we appreciate your immense contributions to the progress and development of your Alma Mata. We really appreciate how you work tirelessly and non-stop to see the school at the top of the ladder of progress and ensuring that the flag of the school keeps on flying high at all time.

 

“You have indeed distinguished yourselves in your service to humanity as far as Oriwu Model College is concerned.

 

“We also need to appreciate able leadership of our Parents Forum. Under this umbrella, our loving and amiable parents have been so supportive and cooperative. The chairman, Mr Adigun Mukaila, has rendered selfless service to the school, always ready and willing whenever we call on him”.

 

As a school that places importance on all-round development, the principal stated that outstanding sports students who excelled in indoor and inter-house sports competitions will also be honored.

 

“Today, we are not only honouring our well-meaning distinguished ladies and gentlemen, but we are also using the occasion to culminate our 2019 Indoor/Inter-house sports competition.

 

She commended the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Mr Olusanya Ebenezer Abayomi for his support and guidance.

 

Alhaji Oguniyi also commended ex-students of the school for being good ambassadors of Oriwu College in various higher institutions and the staff members for their supports and contributions to the progress of the school.

 

The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Mr Olufemi Ebenezer Abaco, while speaking, commended the school for honouring excellence performances which he stated would serve as motivation for them.

 

“I commend the school for honouring her students. With what I’m seeing today, you will all agree with me that this is truly a model school.

 

“It is a good thing that the school is honouring the students. The honour would go a long way to motivate them. I also commend the teachers too for impacting on the students”.

 

Dr Wasiu Odufisan, CPG, FNAPE, a former Senior Prefect of the school, delivered a paper on the topic, “The Past, The Present, The Future – Interplay between Man, Materials and Machine (3MS) in Creating Prosperity”.

In the lecture, he enjoined the students to always discover themselves if they are to go far in life.

 

While stating that education is good, the Geologist also added that “the concept of going to school, get a degree and thereafter work is now an expired system”.

 

He enjoined the students to always think outside the box and develop  their skills.

 

“The only way that you are going to excel today is to sharpen your ability. The ideal thing today is the ability to persuade, solve problem and communicate effectively”.

 

He also advised parents to always discuss and dialogue with the students concerning path to chose rather than forcing them.

 

In the sporting category of the award, White house emerged overall best with 23 points, Green house came 2nd with 20 points and Blue house came 3rd with 19 points. Yellow house and Purple house recoded 15 and 13 points respectively to emerged 4th and 5th.

 

Habeeb Mutiu Adewuyi emerged as the school’s sports man of the year.

 

Games that the students engaged in were Match Past, Football, table Tennis, Draught, Ludo, Ayo Olopon, Scrabble and Chess.
