50 residents of Ikorodu Constituency II have qualified for free cataract surgery in the second edition of the medical initiative being sponsored by Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun (AMA), to correct constituents’ eye challenges and give them better sight.
The fortunate patients were selected from the over 200 applicants from the three council areas being represented under Constituency II by AMA, after due consultation and screening held by medical teams at the AMA Hotel & Suites, Ijede on Saturday.
The programme, being organised by the AMA Smile Foundation, marks another significant step in the commitment of the first-term lawmaker to help constituents in restoring sight and improving the quality of life of people who may otherwise be unable to afford cataract treatment.
Recall that 25 residents were sponsored for successful surgeries in the first edition of the free surgery initiative some months back.
According to the Director-General, AMA Smile Foundation, Hon. Ade Bolowotan, the initiative has become a major programme for the lawmaker as part of his efforts to impact meaningfully on constituents.
He said that the 50 screened applicants will now proceed to the next stage of the programme, which will involve one additional medical test and an orientation designed to prepare them for the surgical procedure.
“The test will form part of the necessary medical preparation, while the orientation will help the beneficiaries understand the surgery process and what to expect before and after the procedure. Upon completion of these preparatory steps, the beneficiaries will undergo cataract surgery completely free of charge,” he explained.
While commending AMA for the free cataract surgery, Bolowotan said that AMA is restoring sight and ensuring that residents have good sight to embark on their daily activities.
“For people whose vision has been affected by cataract, restoring sight can improve their ability to carry out everyday activities, interact with others, work and live with greater independence.
“Hon. AMA’s intervention is therefore not only a healthcare initiative but also an effort to restore confidence, dignity and hope among beneficiaries. This is the beginning of a journey towards restoration of vision, renewed independence and a brighter tomorrow,” he added.
The AMA Smile DG also stated that the transport fare for further examination and surgery proper for the 50 beneficiaries in Lagos will be provided by Hon. AMA
Many of the beneficiaries commended the lawmaker for the renewed hope to regain their sight and offered prayers on his behalf to GOD Almighty for the opportunity.
