Less than two months after embarking on reconstruction of the Main Entrance Gate, renovation of the Security Post, and the remodeling of the School Fence of Shams-el-Deen Grammar School, Ikorodu, the old students’ association of the school has completed and commissioned the befitting projects.
The projects were commissioned by the Tutor -General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Mr Sanni Omotayo Layemo, on Wednesday, July 22.
Shams-el-Deen Grammar School’s Old Students Association actually began the projects which have facelifted their alma mater on April 28, 2026.
Engr. Awe Oluwatimilehi, a chieftain of the alumni association described the commissioning as a milestone and an effort to make it safer and conducive for learning.
“Today, we gather not just to commission a physical structure, but to celebrate another milestone in the history of Shams-el-deen Grammar School. This project, the reconstruction of the Main Entrance Gate, the renovation of the Security Post, and the remodeling of the school fence, represents our collective commitment to creating a safer, more welcoming, and more dignified environment for our students, staff, and the entire school community.
“As members of the Shams-el-Deen Grammar School Ikorodu Old Students’ Association, we are proud to give back to the institution that played a significant role in shaping our lives.”
While also stating that the project is another way to give back to their old school.
“This project is a demonstration of our gratitude, our sense of responsibility, and our unwavering belief that investing in our alma mater is an investment in the future of generations yet to come.”
“I am particularly pleased to note that this project commenced on Tuesday, 28th April, 2026, and, through the dedication of everyone involved, was successfully completed within two and a half weeks. This remarkable achievement reflects what can be accomplished through commitment, teamwork, and effective collaboration,” he said.
Chairman, Board of Trustees, Alhaji Murisik Raji, also speaking emphasised that the alumni association is showing gratitude through the projects
“Today, we gather to commission the reconstructed Main Gate, Security Post, and remodeled Fence of our Alma Mater. This project is our way of saying, “Thank you, SGS. We have not forgotten.” The school gave us knowledge, discipline, and character. Today, SGSI-OSA is giving back.”
Stating that the achievement was done through collective efforts, the BoT Chairman also thanked the Chairman planning committee, Hon Yinka Majekodunmi, members and donors for the success of the projects.
While charging the students to take pride in their school, Alhaji Raji also assured that the alumni association will still do more for the school.
“To our students: walk through this gate with pride. This is the new standard. To our Commissioning Officer, Mr. Sanni Omotayo Layemo, Sir, your presence honours us and shows the government’s support for Old Students’ contributions to education.
“This is just the beginning. SGSI-OSA will do more.”
Mr Sanni Omotayo Layemo, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, in his keynote address, stressed the need for stakeholders to support the government for quality education to be attained.
“There is one thing I always say, and I will continue to say it: the government cannot do it alone. As school administrators, we have come to realise this through experience. The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu, His Excellency Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and our able Commissioner for Education understand this reality. Through their policies and actions, they have demonstrated that education is a collective responsibility.
“Twenty first century education belongs to all of us. While education has always involved every stakeholder, there is now a renewed understanding that it can only reach its full potential when everyone participates actively. One of the most important stakeholders in this process is the Old Students Association.”
While commending the Shams-el-Deen Grammar School’s Old Students Association, District II TGPS, also emphasised the importance of the alumni association to the development of schools.
“What we call an alma mater is more than just a school. Across the world, alumni associations occupy a significant position in the growth and development of educational institutions. In some countries, alumni foundations contribute billions of dollars to sustain and improve their schools.
“Today’s event is another example of the important role an alumni association can play. It is a significant step and a remarkable contribution toward the development of this institution.”
“I have heard so much about this association and its contributions over the years. Their support, commitment, and willingness to assist the school have been evident at every point. I have seen the letters that come to my table and have held several discussions with our principals regarding their efforts.
“I want to use this opportunity to encourage members of the association to remain united. In every organisation, there will be differences and disagreements, but what matters most is conflict resolution and a shared commitment to progress. From what I have seen today, you are moving forward together with a common purpose,” the TGPS said.
Even as he stated that the projects will give a good impression about the school, Mr Layemo also described it as a sign of greater things to come from the association to the alma mater.
“Regarding this project, let me say that first impressions matter. When anyone approaches a place, the entrance speaks volumes. By renovating and reconstructing the entrance and gate of this school, you are sending a clear message that greater things are ahead.
“This project marks the beginning of a new chapter. It is the foundation of many milestones that will transform the appearance, morale, and academic standing of this school.
“However, this is only the beginning. There is still much work to be done. We need modern classrooms and facilities that will provide our students with a true 21st century learning experience. I believe you can achieve this, and I am confident that you will.
“What you are laying today is a foundation that future generations will remember. Years from now, students and alumni will look back and appreciate the contributions being made today.”

As-Samadani, who was a founding father and former Principal of the school for nine years, said that the school anthem that he wrote while in service is really impacting on them.
The Islamic cleric and community leader described the rife between the two associations of the alumni association as a healthy one which he added was caused by zeal and will to work for their old school.
But, while stating that he attended the commissioning because the project was undertaken by the group with the name that the school stakeholders resolved at after intervening to unite the two groups, he has assured that the two will still be merged into one.
Sheikh Oshola thanked the TGPS for attending the commissioning in person and pleaded with him to make Shams-el-Deen Grammar School, Ikorodu, his own school.
Alhaja Abdulsalam Kehinde Rasheedat, Principal Shams-el-Deen Senior Grammar School, Ikorodu, in her remarks commended the old students for rehabilitating the dilapidated gate and fence.
She sought for more support from the alumni in other areas that the school is needing assistance.
Bashorun Babatunde Rotinwa, former Head of Service, Lagos State and Chief Tele Oduloye, former Chairman, Ikorodu Division Resource Development Group (IDRDG), also commended the intervention of the old students.
