2023 Polls: INEC Releases Final List Of Candidates For Presidential, National Assembly

-Awesu out, Shittu in for PDP

-Lists for state elections out October 4

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates contesting for the Presidential and National Assembly elections in the 2023 general elections.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Commission said it approved the final list of candidates “pursuant to section 32(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 general election”.

The release included the candidates’ name, age, qualifications, and other details.

Political parties had a few months back conduct of primaries and nominated candidates to the electoral body.

According to the INEC statement, 18 political parties field presidential candidates and their running mates, while 1,101 candidates are vying for 109 Senatorial seats across the country  and 3,122 candidates for House of Representatives seats.

The total number of 4,223 candidates are contesting 469 legislative positions.

381 females, 1 for Presidential, 92 for Senate, and 288 for House of Representatives are contesting. There are also 11 Persons with Disability (PWDs) in the race.”

For the Lagos East Senatorial which Ikorodu is part of, a total of 9 parties are fielding candidates.

According to the list, Sen. Adetokunbo Mikhail Abiru, the incumbent Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial  District on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform is the senatorial candidate for the same seat in the 2023 elections, while the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) are fielding Akoba Nicholas Adekunle and young Oluwaranmilowo Mayowa respectively against him.

The released list for Ikorodu Federal Constituencies contains the incumbent representative, Rep. Babajimi Adegoke Benson who will be contesting for the third term. Against the initial announcement by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Mr AbdulKareem Olugbenga Shittu made the list dethroning Mr. Awesu AbdulAzeez.

Shittu who made the final list had dragged INED and his party to Federal High Court sitting in Lagos over alleged imposition of Awesu and got judgment in his favour.

A total of 8 parties fielded candidates for the Ikorodu Federal Constituency seat.

List of Lagos East Senatorial and Ikorodu Federal Constituency candidates and their details are below except that of the PDP candidate, Shittu whose details are not included in the INEC release.
