Members of the Tortuga Frigate, on Saturday, November 7, 2020, set a standard for other youths groups as they made massive donations to the Child Lifeline, an orphanage home located in Ibeshe, Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area, Ikorodu Division, Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria.

The huge items, which put smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries, included food items, beverages, toiletries, clothing, live stocks, bottle water, sanitation materials and lawnmower among others.

The donation was made in celebration of an annual thanksgiving event of the group which witnessed a special prayer session and medical checkup for the members of the club at the Treasure Lounge and Bar, along Lagos road, lkorodu.

This year’s edition of the Thanksgiving was tagged, ‘2020 Special Prayer Thanksgiving/Visitation to Orphanage Home (Giving to the Needy)’.

Comrade Olalekan Pelumi, President of the Tortuga Frigate, while speaking with THE IMPACT, described the gesture as part of the club’s contributions to the development of the society and identifying with those in need.

He also stated that they are setting good examples for other youths to emulate instead of engaging in violent and other anti – social vices that are disruptive to themselves and the society at large.

“We normally have a special prayer/thanksgiving and also donate to orphanage homes. We decided to make our donations massive this year because people are really facing hardship due to the COVID – 19 pandemic and #EndSARS protest.

“We are using the opportunity to give thanks to God for preserving the lives of our members and families. The event is an avenue to give thanks to God”.

Speaking on other programmes of Tortuga Frigate held this year and the one that will be holding later in December, Olalekan said:

“Community service and impacting on others are part of the aims and objectives of our association. The presentation of sanitation tools to the Ayangbure International market was delayed till October due to the Coronavirus crisis. It’s a yearly programme.

“By December, we shall be going to the beach with our family members which are also an annual event. The Beach party is usually accompanied with Love Feast where our individual members and families will prepare different foods while coming along to the Beach which is going to be shared among our members”.

He emphasized that apart  from impacting on the community and giving to those in need,  he added that Tortuga’s objectives also include setting good examples to other youth groups, especially the cult groups that are engaging in violence and killings.

“After we donated environmental tools, some political office holders and others called me to commend us for our activities and wondered why other groups cannot copy us and I told them that part of the reasons we are doing this is to make other groups emulate us.

“We want them to see that they too can impact on society positively and they do not have to kill themselves and engage in hooliganism. As a youth, you have responsibility to your community. This is why we are doing this.

“I am sending message to all youths in Ikorodu Division and outside that they need to start doing something impactful instead of doing things that are destructive to the society”.

Mr Dotun Adesanya, the House Master, Child Life Line, commended the Tortuga Frigate for what he termed massive donations to the orphanage home.

“They do this every year and items donated this year are fantastic. The turnout of the group’s members for this donation is also massive”, he said.

“We have always been dreaming of lawn mower to trim the grasses here and I specifically made the request to Mr Rado (Olalekan Pelumi) when he came here earlier and today, I am really very surprised and elated that it is being donated alongside a good number of other items for the children.

“When you keep food on the table of less privilege, there are special blessings for it.

“We receive donations from the public every time but not as many as what Tortuga Frigate always brings to us every year. We also have some other clubs and groups in Ikorodu and outside that always extend same gesture to us on regular basis as well as corporate international organisations  that usually donate to us too”, he added.

He said that children in their home are always happy and feel hopeful whenever they see people coming around.

“It is good for individuals that have enough to always give to the less privileged. These are rescued children from the streets and others are motherless and they are counting on the society for donations.

“They are always happy when they receive donations like these and their hope is raised and also feel happy because they feel the love that some people are showing to them. They always feel that they too have hope to go places and that this is not the end of their lives”.

“These children love to see people as you can see that they are happy now. They were even ready to play football with members of the club but unfortunately,  the weather did not permit that”.

He further thanked members of Tortuga Frigate for their  gesture and appealed to them to recommend the home to their friends too so as to have more people coming around.

“We know that we shall be seeing members of Tortuga Frigate again, especially the Tortuga Chairman, Mr Olalekan Rado. They have always come here to make friends with us. We love to see them more often. We also want them to talk about Child Lifeline to their friends too, so that we can have a lot of friends.

“We thank you so much and pray that your club will continue to move higher and where you have raised funds for the less privileged and people in need, the Lord will continue to supply more for you there”, he prayed.

Earlier in the day during the special prayer, Pastor Oshikomaya Kayode commended members of the group for appreciating God in their lives and for impacting on the community.

The Pastor that said that he was with the members of the group at the last year’s event and charged them to continue their good deeds and support one another.

Alfa Amokomowo, who led the Islamic prayer session, charged the members  of Tortuga Frigate to cooperate and assist one another so that the group can continue to wax stronger.

He also asked them to continue to be good ambassadors of Tortuga Frigate and Ikorodu at large.
