Staff and students of Wurabridge Schools located on Henry Ohanugo street, Macaulay area of Bayeku in Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Development Area (LCDA), Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, engaged in sanitation exercise to make their host community clean.

The exercise, themed, ‘Operation make Macaulay clean’, and led by the founder and Proprietor of the Wurabridge Group of School, Mrs Racheal Fapounda, saw students of the Senior Secondary section of the school going round major streets in the area to pick dirt and to sensitize residents of the area on the need for a clean environment.

Students and pupils of the school also embarked on fitness walk exercise round the community while also dancing to songs in the process. The fitness walk was tagged, “Wurabridge walk for the community’.

During the sanitation exercise, students of the school chorused the popular song, ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’, to sensitise residents of the community on the need to engage in sanitation exercise regularly to make their environment clean.

According to the management of the school, both the sanitation exercise and fitness walk were meant to instill the spirit of community service, cleanliness and exercising for fitness in the students.

Mrs Blessing Adeleke, a teacher in the school and the coordinator of the exercise, speaking with THE IMPACT, said that:

“Wurabridge Schools decided to dedicate today to the cleaning of the Macaulay community. It’s our way of contributing to our immediate community and also making the students imbibe the spirit of community service.

“It’s our way of contributing towards making the community healthy and also sensitizing members of the community on the need to do sanitation and keep the environment friendly.

“We intend to do this on monthly basis to ensure that Macaulay is clean and healthy.

“Today is also our sporting day. We usually go out for fitness walk and exercise. That’s why you see our students in their sports wears.

“While we go out cleaning the environment, we also ensure that we keep ourselves fit and healthy too.

“You can see that the students are happy going out to do sanitation and also engage in fitness walk. They would be very alert by the time they return to school to engage in academic activities. We know that exercise is good for us and that’s why we go out on weekly basis to engage in it”.

Aniekeme Godswill-Effiong, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) three student in the school, also speaking with THE IMPACT, stated that the school is engaging in the sanitation exercise and fitness walk in order to have a clean environment and healthy living.

“I feel good cleaning the environment because it’s not good to live in a dirty community. Living in a dirty environment can cause sickness and diseases”, he stated.

“The exercise helps us to release the muscles in the body and also keeps us sharp and alert and I wish to engage more in these exercises”.

Chidiebere Gift, another JSS 3 student, speaking with our reporter, stated that residents of the Macaulay will be proud of them for helping in making the environment clean.

“I feel so happy to be part of the exercises. The community will be proud of us for making the environment clean. The exercise made us feel healthy”.
