Man Kills Self After Strangulating Wife, Son To Death

Kunle ADELABU

A man, Mr Charles Omomo, a commercial okada rider, allegedly killed himself in the early hours of Friday (yesterday) at Gbasemo, Aga area of Ikorodu, after strangulating his wife, Mrs Faith Omomo, and six year old son.

It was alleged that the son has been a subject of disagreement between the couple who were indigenes of Delta State.

The incident drew a large number of residents and security personnel to the scene.

The two other children of the couple who raised the alarm were seen in the company of the neighbors and police officers in-charge of the matter.

According to some of the neighbours, the couple were seen early in the morning taken their bath and returned to their room.

Another account of the incident stated that a loud sound from a radio emanated from the couple’s apartment early in the morning on the fateful day.

At around 11am on that day, members of the Liwe cult in Ikorodu arrived the scene of the incident and after discussing with the police officers and the leader of Onyabo Vigilance group, Mr Lanre Olabinjo who was also at the scene , they were allowed access into the victims’ apartment.

In the discussion that followed, it was agreed that the police should evacuate the remains of the woman and son while that of the man who hung himself was left for the traditionalists to take charge.

This decision was taken due to the fact that death by hanging is a taboo in Ikorodu community and it usually necessitates certain traditional rites when it occurs.

The police later put Late Mrs Omomo and her late son in body bags provided   by the personnel of the Lagos Rapid Response (LRS) who left the scene earlier after they were called for another emergency.

The police officer in charge of the matter complained bitterly about LRS officials whom he claimed are fond of abandoning their duty to the police.

He alleged that the RRS officials acted in same manner at the scene of another incident recently, adding that that has been their acts.

Remains of the woman and son were seen taking out of the house in body bags at around 12pm by the officers and were put into a waiting car.

When our reporter gained entry into the room of the victims, the man was seen still hung to the ceiling fan while the lifeless body of his wife was lying  on the floor and that of their son was found on the chair with foam in his mouth.

THE IMPACT gathered that there has been quarrel between the man and his wife over the real father of the boy.  Some of the eyes witnesses told our reporter that the paternity of the boy has allegedly been traced  to one of the late Omomo’s relatives.

The issue, according to report gathered, had since been generating furore but that nobody believed that it would degenerated into such an unfortunate incident .

Some of the eye witnesses also told our reporter that the couple were seen sitting at the frontage of the house on Thursday (May 23) evening discussing without any sign of quarrel.

Speaking with THE IMPACT, the eldest daughter (name withheld), who is 12 years old, she stated that she did not know what happened but that she only discovered that her mother and brother were lifeless with blood all over their bodies while their father hung to the ceiling fan.

She said that they all slept peacefully the previous night after they had dinner without any problem.

She added that she saw her both her parents discussing before going to bed but that she did not know what they were discussing.

Mr Salami also said that he saw the couple sitting at the frontage of the house the previous night.
