President Muhammadu Buhari was on Wednesday declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), winner of the presidential election held on Saturday, February 23, 2019 .
He won his re-election bid with 15,191,847 votes to defeat his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party in the presidential poll that polled 11,262,978 votes.
The Returning Officer for the 2019 Presidential election and the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the declaration early Wednesday.
The INEC Chairman declaring Buhari as the winner stated:
“That Muhammadu Buhari, having scored the highest number of votes and satisfied the provision of the electoral act is hereby declared the winner of the presidential election.’’
Buhari won the election in Bauchi, Borno, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Osun, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara.
While the PDP candidate, Atiku won in Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba and the FCT.
He announced that certificate of return will be issued to the President-elect and Vice President-elect by 2 pm on Wednesday.
