The Representatives of Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, has urged both members of the House of Representatives and Senate to ensure that national interests supersede political interest.

He made this appeal while reacting to the purported move by some Senators to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammud Buhari, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Some Senators were reported to have  made attempt to  commence impeachment proceedings against the President who was accused of paying $496m to the government of the United States of America for the purchase of 12 Super Tucano aircraft without National Assembly approval.

“I think that we should place national interest above the partisan politics”, Hon. Benson cautioned.

“I always say that we, as legislators, have roles to play in the development of the country; we have roles to play in reversing the trend of insecurity in the land. We should have state police”, he stated.

“We have proposed the creation of state police to tackle the problem of insecurity but it failed and we are still facing insecurity. Why did it fail?” , he queried.

He enjoined his colleagues to revisit the issue of the creation of the state police and ensure that it is passed into law to tackle insecurity, while also caling for support for President Buhari’s efforts in solving the problems of Boko Haram and other insecurity issues in Nigeria.

“I don’t think it’s enough to impeach Mr President for given approval for the purchase of the aircrafts because they are meant to address problems pervading the country. He should be allowed to adopt the principles of necessity.

“As long as what the money is used for is addressing a problem facing the country, I think that we should all support Mr President instead of fighting him” ,  Hon. Benson appealed to the lawmakers.
