Leadership is not measured by the number of promises made during election campaigns but by the number of lives transformed when the opportunity to serve is given. It is measured by the roads constructed, the schools improved, the businesses supported, the communities empowered and, ultimately, the difference made in the everyday lives of the people.
For over a decade, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, popularly known as JB, has demonstrated that political representation can go beyond occupying an office to becoming a vehicle for meaningful development.
His latest mega empowerment programme is yet another compelling testament to this commitment.
At a time when economic realities have placed enormous pressure on households and small businesses, Hon. Benson has once again reached out to his constituents with interventions that speak directly to their needs.

From laptops and business grants to vehicles, industrial equipment, household appliances and other tools of economic empowerment, the programme reflects a practical understanding of the challenges confronting ordinary Nigerians.
What particularly impresses me is the philosophy behind such interventions. Empowerment should not merely provide temporary relief. It should create opportunities for productivity, economic independence and sustainable livelihoods.
A laptop in the hands of a young professional can become a gateway to limitless opportunities. A sewing machine can transform a struggling artisan into an employer of labour. A freezer can strengthen a small business, while a commercial vehicle can provide a family with a dependable source of income.

These are not merely gifts. They are instruments of economic possibility.
Although my malfunctioning phone caused me to miss both the nomination window and the empowerment event, I followed the developments with genuine admiration. My appreciation of this initiative is rooted not in personal benefit but in the conviction that good leadership deserves recognition.
And this is precisely why Hon. Babajimi Benson deserves to be celebrated.
A decade of purposeful representation
Since his election to the House of Representatives in 2015, Benson has steadily built a record of service that cuts across infrastructure, education, healthcare, electricity, security, economic empowerment and social welfare.

Consider the roads constructed and rehabilitated across Ikorodu Federal Constituency. These projects have improved access to communities, supported commercial activities and addressed infrastructure deficits that had persisted for years.
Consider the 80-bed Mother and Child Hospital in Imota, a significant healthcare intervention designed to improve access to maternal and child health services.
Consider the classroom blocks, educational facilities and ICT centres established to improve learning conditions and expand opportunities for young people.
Through the Light Up Ikorodu initiative, Benson has also championed the provision of transformers, solar streetlights and household solar systems, bringing much-needed energy infrastructure to underserved communities.

Then there is the iCare Food Bank, whose monthly Apo Àánú initiative has provided food assistance to vulnerable households for ten years. The programme recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, having supported thousands of families since its establishment in October 2016.
His interventions also extend to sports development, youth capacity building, vocational training and community communication, including the establishment of IKD 106.1 FM.
These are tangible contributions to the development of Ikorodu Division.
But Hon. Benson’s accomplishments are not limited to constituency projects.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, he has contributed to important legislative initiatives concerning national security, defence research, electricity and institutional reforms. His legislative record includes the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Amendment Act and the Defence Research and Development Bureau Act.

This combination of legislative engagement and constituency development is particularly significant. After all, a federal legislator must be assessed not only by what he brings home but also by what he contributes to national development.
Why the latest empowerment matters
The Renewed Hope Mega Empowerment Programme held on 20 October 2026 at the Ikorodu Musical Village brought this commitment to grassroots development into sharper focus.
The distribution of 10 transformers, five security patrol vans, vehicles, tricycles, household solar systems, laptops, vocational equipment and other productive assets was accompanied by ₦225 million in business grants to 800 beneficiaries.
One hundred beneficiaries received ₦500,000 each, while another 700 received ₦250,000 each.

The scale of the intervention is impressive, but its potential impact is even more significant.
At a time when many businesses are struggling with rising operating costs and young people are searching for opportunities to become economically productive, such interventions offer practical support.
I am particularly delighted by the inclusion of laptops. In an increasingly digital world, access to technology is no longer optional for meaningful participation in many professions. For students, journalists, writers, researchers, entrepreneurs and other professionals, a laptop can significantly improve productivity and open doors to new opportunities.
The programme also demonstrated Benson’s understanding that different people and communities have different needs. While a laptop may be invaluable to a digital professional, a sewing machine may be the breakthrough an aspiring fashion designer needs. For another beneficiary, a freezer, commercial vehicle or business grant could make all the difference.

That is the beauty of purposeful empowerment: identifying needs and providing practical solutions.
The case for continuity
As the 2027 general elections approach, the people of Ikorodu Federal Constituency will once again have an opportunity to assess their representation and determine the direction they want for the future.
For me, that conversation must be anchored on performance, accessibility, consistency and the capacity to deliver.
Public office is a sacred trust, and those who seek it must be prepared to account for their stewardship.
Hon. Babajimi Benson has spent more than a decade building a record that can be examined, questioned and assessed. His achievements provide a substantive basis for discussing the value of continuity in representation.

Certainly, there are still challenges requiring attention across Ikorodu Division. Many communities need better roads, improved public infrastructure, stronger economic opportunities and more responsive public services.
Yet, these outstanding needs do not invalidate the progress already made. Rather, they provide an opportunity to build on existing achievements.
There is also an important advantage in having a representative who understands the constituency, has developed working relationships across different levels of government and possesses considerable legislative experience.
Hon. Benson’s three terms in the National Assembly have given him institutional knowledge, political networks and experience that could prove valuable in advancing Ikorodu’s interests.
However, experience alone is not sufficient justification for continued representation. It must be accompanied by results, renewed commitment and a clear vision for the future.

On these considerations, Hon. Benson has a compelling record to present.
His aspiration for a fourth term should therefore be considered within the context of his demonstrated service and what he proposes to accomplish next.
Appreciating service, encouraging greater accomplishments
There is a tendency in our political environment to reduce every expression of appreciation to personal interest. We sometimes assume that anyone who praises a public official must have received something or be expecting a favour.
I disagree with that thinking.
We must develop a political culture in which good deeds are acknowledged, constructive criticism is welcomed and public officials are encouraged to do even better.
Appreciation should not be conditional upon personal benefit. Neither should political support demand the abandonment of independent judgement.

I believe Hon. Babajimi Benson has earned commendation for his sustained commitment to the development of Ikorodu Federal Constituency.
His latest empowerment programme reinforces that conviction.
More importantly, his record provides a persuasive argument for continuity, not as an entitlement to public office, but as an opportunity to consolidate achievements and pursue even greater development.
To Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, I extend my sincere appreciation for the investments made in our communities and the opportunities created for our people.
Thank you for demonstrating that political representation can be compassionate, purposeful and productive.
Thank you for remembering the vulnerable, supporting the enterprising, investing in the young and responding to the developmental needs of our communities.

As you seek another mandate, may the achievements of the past inspire an even greater commitment to the future.
The greatest campaign message any public servant can present is a record of promises fulfilled and lives positively impacted.
In that regard, Hon. Babajimi Benson has a story worth telling.
And as Ikorodu looks towards 2027, his record of service deserves recognition, his achievements deserve appreciation, and his vision for the future deserves serious consideration.
For JB, the work speaks. For Ikorodu, the journey continues.
