General Hospital Ikorodu (GHI) recently hosted the Nigeria–South Africa Diaspora Doctors Mission, bringing together Nigerian-born and Nigerian-trained medical professionals practising in South Africa and healthcare specialists in Lagos for a collaborative programme focused on advanced surgical care, knowledge exchange, and capacity building.
The specialized medical mission featured a range of surgical and interventional procedures, providing an important platform for GH healthcare professionals to collaborate with members of the diaspora and gain exposure on specialized techniques and expertise.

Among the procedures performed during the mission was uterine fibroid embolization, an interventional procedure used in the management of uterine fibroids. The visiting team also worked alongside specialists and the General Surgery team to carry out surgical procedures, including myomectomy and thyroidectomy.
Welcoming the visiting team, the Medical Director, Dr. Taiwo K. Hassan, described the mission as a welcome development and expressed the hospital’s appreciation for the opportunity to host Nigerian-born and Nigerian-trained doctors currently practising in South Africa.

He noted that collaborations of this nature provide valuable opportunities for healthcare institutions to share expertise, strengthen professional relationships, and improve access to specialized medical services.
The Medical Director appreciated all members of the Nigeria–South Africa Diaspora Doctors Forum for their contribution to the success of the mission and for their continued commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery, professional collaboration, and capacity development in Nigeria.
Also speaking, Dr. Tunde Oloyede, Assistant Director of Clinical Services and Training and Head of the Orthopaedics Department, GHI, explained that the mission commenced with an opening ceremony at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), followed by activities at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), before concluding at General Hospital Ikorodu.

Dr. Oloyede expressed appreciation to the Nigeria–South Africa Diaspora Doctors Forum for facilitating the mission. He emphasized the importance of such partnerships in bringing advanced medical expertise closer to Nigerian healthcare institutions and creating sustainable opportunities for knowledge transfer, mentorship, and professional training.
