The National Association of Ikorodu Division Students (NAIDS), the umbrella body of the entire students in Ikorodu Division, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, is set to strengthen the constitution of the association by reviewing its provisions.
According 7th NAIDS National Senate President, Sen. Abdullateef Opeyemi Balogun, the review is necessary to bring the laws in tandem with current realties.
The two committees – Constitution Amendment and Bye-Election Committees are chaired by Senator Afina Khalelullah Akorede, representing Ijede LCDA and Senator Alli Aishat Omolara, the Senator representing Ikorodu LG, respectively.
While the CAC is setup primarily to review and propose amendments to the constitution where necessary, the Bye-Election Committee is to facilitate and oversee the process of filling vacant positions in both the Executive and Parliamentary arms.
These were some of the resolutions of the NAIDS Parliamentary Council held at the weekend with 13 out of 18 Senators in attendance.
After noting with grave concern, the recurring incidents of police-student clashes, ranging from minimal to brutal encounters, which have continued to affect students academically and personally, the House also moved to address permanently the challenges by resolving that the leadership of the union should pay a courtesy visit to headquarters of security agencies and organise a joint town-hall meeting tagged: “Police and Students Dialogue”.
The purpose of the town hall meeting is to bring students and police officers together to identify the root causes of these clashes and proffer lasting solutions that will foster mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
” We believe this dialogue will provide a lasting solution to this long-standing problem,” the NAIDS Senate President said.
During the sitting, the House also received a clean copy of the NAIDS budget earlier passed by its members and assented to by the NAIDS Executive President, with resolution that necessary committees should monitor its implementations.
