The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has approved 16 new vocational centres across primary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), Ikorodu Local Government.
The approval was granted on Wednesday, bringing skills-based education within the reach of the schools in Ikorodu Local Government comprising of Ikorodu Central LG and the five Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Approved centres are:
1. Art & Craft Centre, AUD Primary School, Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA
2. Art & Craft Centre, AUI Primary School, Ijede LCDA
3. Art & Craft Centre, UPE Primary School, Ajaguro, Ikorodu West LCDA
4. Art & Craft Centre, Anglican Primary School, Akaun, Ikorodu North LCDA
5. Art & Craft Centre, Jamahatul Islamiyah Primary School, Ikorodu LG
6. Art & Craft Centre, AUD Primary School, Imota LCDA
7. Home Economics Centre, St. John Anglican Primary School, Imota LCDA
8. Home Economics Centre, Anglican Primary School, Ijede LCDA
9. Home Economics Centre, Farm Settlement Primary School, Odogunyan, Ikorodu North LCDA
10. Home Economics Centre, Togedejoye Community Primary School, Ojokoro, Ikorodu West LCDA
11. Home Economics Centre, UAMC Eleja Primary School, Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA

The LGEA stated that the approval was granted following the importance attached to creativity and vocational aspects of learning by the Education Secretary, LGEA Ikorodu, Alhaji Taiwo Odumbo.
It also added that the new centres would also bring opportunity to pupils in areas where the facilities were not available before now.
”The approval follows a period of sustained advocacy led by the Education Secretary, Alhaji Taiwo Abiodun Odumbo, whose commitment to reviving the psychomotor domain of basic education prompted a comprehensive review of vocational infrastructure across Ikorodu Division.”
”That review revealed a longstanding imbalance: while Ikorodu Central enjoyed the full complement of Art & Craft, Home Economics, and Computer Literacy centres, Ikorodu North LCDA had none, and Imota, Ijede, Ikorodu West, and Igbogbo/Baiyeku each lacked one or more centre types; a gap that placed an unfair burden on pupils and teachers required to travel outside their localities to access practical training.”
Ikorodu LGEA authorities emphasised that with the 16 new centres, each of the council areas in Ikorodu now has access to the three categories of vocational education.
”With this approval, every LCDA within Ikorodu Division now has access to all three categories of vocational training, correcting a disparity that had persisted for years.
