Meet ASORO, the most talked about candidate for NYCN Lagos East Vice Chairman

On Thursday 4th April 2024, the entire stakeholders of NYCN Ikorodu West declared their interest in the Vice Chairman of Lagos East. The seat which put the responsibility of overseeing youth activities in the 16 LG/LCDAs under the leadership of the VC East they said require a capable hand. According to the State Chairman NYCN Lagos; Lekan Biliamin Oba, “if a ranking of the best performing coordinators is done today and Asoro is not among the top 2, there is a fraud”. Asoro capability was reechoed by the Executive Chairman of the LCDA; Otunba Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju FCA FCTI who stated that until the leadership of Asoro, youth activities are not known in the LCDA, thus, the entire LCDA felt that the result for hard work is more work, thus he should be trusted with the seat of the Vice Chairman Lagos East in the coming NYCN Lagos Congress.

Who is Asoro?

Asoro Abubakri Olatunji is a legal and compliance expert, data analyst, youth development expert, writer and poet.

As a youth development expert, his activities made him one of the most referred Youth Leaders in the country. A few years into his administration as the Coordinator of National Youth Council of Nigeria Ikorodu West Area Council, the organization attracted and executed three fully-funded grants including Behavioural Changes by UNICEF through Society for Family Health, Local Government Accountability by BudgiT, and another by Peace First Initiative. These grants make NYCN Ikorodu West the only local branch of NYCN that has executed the highest number of grant projects in the country. Under his leadership, indigent students have received morethan 100 free JAMB forms, 100 school uniforms, and annual free JAMB Tutorial classes. He has facilitated over 50 direct and indirect jobs to young people as well as business loans and grants. He is a living example of the sociological term “environmental determinism”, his background as someone born in one of the most remote communities in Africa horned is passion for societal change and leadership.

Beyond his sterling credentials as a youth advocate and development expert, Asoro is passionate about health. In 2018, he joined the campaign against Tuberculosis in Lagos State and has contributed directed and indirectly to the survival of over 300 patients in the state. Damien Foundation, a sub recipient of the Global Fund Grant on TB, HIV and Malaria awarded him as the Best Cough Officer in Lagos State in 2021. He also appears on all printed Public Services Announcements (PSA) materials produced by the state. He is also a member of the state committee that developed the PSAs.

As an undergraduate student of law, through his position as the Secretary of the Law Students Association Lagos State Chapter, the NOUN bill was amended, it put institutional discrimination against National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) students to alt. Other overhauls like Annual Dinner, Centralised Moot court and so on were also introduced.

Asoro is also the President and member Board of Trustees of Tekwallahi Islamic Foundation, an organization that has provided over Twenty Million (N20,000,000) in non-interest business support to members between 2014 and 2023, especially residents of Majidun/Ogolonto, one of the under served communities in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria.

Professionally, Asoro works with one of the biggest start-up tech logistics companies in Nigeria -Gokada. He uses Data Analysis to monitor and renew documentation. He has used his office to cut the company’s bogus cost on documentation, also reducing travel distance and physical contact of end users of the documents by ensuring they get it remotely. The company helps businesses take their goods to end users in the most reliable and time saving manner thereby breaking distance barriers, expanding market scope of businesses thereby increasing profits.

To further horn his skill in corporate governance, he became a member of Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Asoro believes that Arbitration is the fastest route to justice for commercial disputes in Nigeria and Africa and became a qualified Arbitrator and Associate Member of Nigeria Institute of Chartered Arbitrators. He is currently pursuing his master’s in Law with focus on Cooperate Governance, Intellectual Property (IP), Maritime Law and Tax.

In the past years, Asoro has garnered numerous awards for his contributions toward advancing developments. In 2019, he was awarded Law Student With Great Prospective by the Law Students Association, NOUN, he graduated with a total of four (4) awards. He was also awarded The Most Outstanding Community Youth Influencer In Lagos State by the Lagos Community Youth Development Initiative in 2023, among other numerous awards to his name. In his spare time, he enjoys writing articles and poems on public issues. He loves traveling.
