Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and chieftain , Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Lagos State.

The former Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Asiwaju Reuben Olorunfunmi Baorun has called for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, stating that his policies are dangerous and destructive to the existence of the country.

Basorun, who retired as the Deputy Director (Domestic Operations), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said that the policy may close down businesses in Nigeria, and further impose hardship on the citizenry.

The chieftain of the Governance Advisory Council also warned against resistance by Nigerians if the policy is not reversed within 48hours.

The elder statesman, who was a foundation staff of the CBN, made his view known in a statement on Thursday. He lamented his experience when he went to a bank on Thursday to withdraw money to pay his staff’s salaries but was unable to do because he was told that there was no cash, a common experience with Nigerians in the past few days.

His statement is titled, ‘Nigeria Is Making A Dangerous History By The Almighty Emefiele, The Governor Of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’.

“Today (Thursday) at 10:00am, I was at the Ayangbure street, Ikorodu branch of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), to withdraw cash for payment of my staff’s salaries at Romo Nigeria Co. Ltd., and my church, Gospel Church of C and S. On presentation of the Romo cheque, the most senior officer at the branch told me there was no cash. I went down to the ATM section where over 50 people crowded the hall, moreso, l was told the ATM was not dispensing cash (neither old nor new]”, Asiwaju Basorun said.

“I have just read online a directive from the CBN Governor that banks should pay a maximum of #20,000, out to customers on presentation of teller.

Lamenting the effect of the CBN’s policy, Asiwaju Basorun said that Nigerians may rise against it.

“It is now clear that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is making a dangerous and destructive history for Nigeria. Since the CBN was established in 1959 (and I was a foundation staff), no Governor has taken Nigeria for a ride as Emefiele”, he said.

“The multiplier effect of his rather evil directive is to close down all businesses in Nigeria, and further add to the hardship Nigerians are experiencing in recent times. I make bold to state that unless this oppressive directive is withdrawn within the next 48hours, Nigerian masses will have no choice than to rise and compel the Government to take positive action to reverse it”, elder statesman warned.

“Meanwhile, I sincerely call on Governor Emefiele to voluntarily resign now or face the wrath of the Nigerian masses. Enough is enough! “, he said.
