The clamour by the traditional rulers and residents of Ikorodu Division that the General Hospital, Ikorodu, should be upgraded to a teaching hospital, has received the blessing of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as recommendation in that regard was passed on Monday, January 23 2023.

The House made the pronouncement after considering the recommendations of the House Committee on Health Services which recommended that some secondary hospitals across the five divisions of the state be upgraded to tertiary status to reduce pressure on the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

This was disclosed in a statement personally signed by the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly and the representative of the Ikorodu Constituency I, Hon. Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle (SOB) Agunbiade.

The resolution is, however, awaiting the concurrent approval of the Lagos State Executive Council, to become a law.

“The current tenure of the 9th Assembly of Lagos State is fast running out, and all hands are on deck to ensure that all outstanding legislative business are done before the expiration of the tenure”, the statement stated.

“Further to the above, the House of Assembly received and considered the report of the Committee on Health Services yesterday, Monday, 23rd January, on the need to upgrade some secondary Hospitals to tertiary Hospitals as a way to reduce pressure on LASUTH as the only state owned tertiary hospital.

“The house passed all the recommendations of the committee with minor amendments, as the resolution of the House.

“One of the recommendations is that a secondary hospital in each of the 5 divisions of the state be upgraded to a tertiary hospital of the rank of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital ( LASUTH) as a way to relief the secondary hospital so recommended, of the current pressure on them and consequently relieving LASUTH of the overbearing pressure on it.

“Ikorodu General Hospital is one of the Hospitals recommended and to benefit from this gesture when the state executive eventually decides on the resolutions of the house”, Hon. Agunbiade confirmed the position of the House.

The ranking lawmaker, who also doubled as the Chairman, Nigerian Majority Leaders Forum, said that the process that will eventually lead to the upgrading of the hospital, has begun.

“This is how the transformation of the Lagos State Polytechnic to its current status of University of Science and Technology, started.

“As leader of legislative business in the House, It is my commitment to see the report listed, presented and the recommendation therein adopted as the resolution of the House”.

Also in the statement, Hon. Agunbiade commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo – Olu and Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Bisola Ruth Olusanya, on the successful completion and commissioning of the Lagos Rice factory in Imota, which he said will improve the conditions of the host community and its people.

“This legislative business was undertaken simultaneously with the commissioning of the rice mill at Imota yesterday. Unfortunately, I can only be at a place at once. I hope this will meet the pleasure and satisfy the good hearted people who expressed their worries through calls and messages that I was not at the commissioning”, he said.

“We are happy we have the rice mill in our Division, and still basking in the euphoria of the job opportunities the mill will confer on this division. Congratulations to our own Bisola Olusanya under whose tenure as the Commissioner for Agriculture, this historic project was commissioned. Thank you Mr. Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu for actualising the dream. God be praised”, the Majority further said.

It would be recalled that some few months back, Hon. Agunbiade visited the General Hospital, Ikorodu, to donate many hospital beds which were received by the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer, General Hospital, Ikorodu, Dr Taiwo Hassan and his team on behalf of the hospital.
