Hospital staff cleaning during the 2022 World Environmental Day

The Environmental Officer of General Hospital, Ijede, Mrs. Rita Ehinmetan, has called on the general public to continually cultivate the habit of cleaning the environment to make it habitable for all and future generations.

Ehinmetan made the call while speaking at a sensitisation campaign programme organised by the hospital to commemorate the year 2022 World Environmental Day, noting that the essence of this year’s celebration is to advocate a cleaner environment.

She emphasised the urgent need to guard and protect the environment jealously for the health and well – being of all human beings, plants and animals.

While imploring participants to always patronise the PSP operators in their respective areas, the Environmental Officer emphasised the need to dispose of refuse appropriately to prevent the spread of germs and diseases in the environment.

“We must know that it is what we give to the environment that the environment gives back to us, so we must continually put in efforts towards making our environment better for us by ensuring we don’t relent or rest on our oars in keeping it clean at all times”, she said.

She urged Lagosians to shun every act of illegal disposal of refuse in drainages and canals, cultivate the habit of recycling, dispose of sewage properly to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases, reduce carbon emissions and encourage tree planting among others.

Cultivating these habits, according to her, will go a long way in preventing pollution, depletion of the ozone layer, degradation, and the protection of water bodies and water sources among others.

June 5 of every year is recognised by the United Nations as the World Environment Day and this year’s theme is “Only One Earth”.
