Senate Passes LG Financial Autonomy Bill

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has passed the Local Government Financial Autonony Bill.

92 out of 109 Senators voted to pass the LG Bill during the clause by clause voting on the ongoing amendment of the Nigerian constitution.

The Bill seeks alteration of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), to grant financial autonomy to the 774 local government councils in the country.

On Monday (yesterday), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had led a protest to demand autonomy for the local governments and the judiciary.

NLC President, Mr. Ayuba Wabara, had on Monday, charged lawmakers to vote on favour of autonomy for the Local governments
