Federal Lawmaker Calls for Caution On Second Wave of Coronavirus Pandemic

Disturbed by the rising cases of COVID-19 infections in the country, the representative of the Ikorodu Federal Constituency and the Chairman, House Committee on Defense, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, has sounded a note of caution to Nigerians regarding the effects of the second wave of the pandemic.

The deadly virus, which has been ravaging the global village since 2019, has killed many people and also disrupted the social and economic order in the world.

Hon. Benson issued the warning in a statement on Monday, January 11, 2021.

While praying for the fulfilment of the citizens’ desires in the new year, the second term lawmaker enjoined them to go about their daily activities with caution.

“I bring you good tidings this 2021 and pray our innermost desires and silent prayers are answered, while we await the actualisation of our prayers, I beg of us to be conscious of the prevailing virus ravaging us and straining our healthcare sector”, he pleaded.

“I know by nature, we revel in festivities but the times we are call for caution”.

Expressing his sadness over the effect of the pandemic on Nigerians, the lawmaker stated that 99, 063 has been infected in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic.

According to the lawmaker, 35, 448 cases out of this total case in the country were recorded in Lagos State alone which established the State as the epicenter of the pandemic according to the lawmaker.

“As of January 9, 2021, Nigeria had recorded 99,063 cases and sadly 1350 deaths. Out of these cases, 35,448 were recorded in Lagos State with 249 deaths”, Hon Benson stated.

“The second wave of Coronavirus is real and more potent than envisaged”.

He warned that those with an ailment or the other are at high risk of been infected while calling on the general citizenry to be cautious.

Hon. Benson also charged Nigerians to endeavour to continually adhere to the COVID-19 protocols to keep the virus at bay.

“Everybody close to you risks complications from COVID-19 infection, especially those with underlying health conditions.

“So, to keep COVID19 at bay, we need to protect ourselves by wearing a mask, washing our hands with soap and water regularly if possible or use alcohol-based sanitizers and maintaining proper social distance”, he further warned.

He commended the incident commander in Lagos, Gov. Babajide Sanwo – Olu, and all the frontline workers for the way the situation had been managed so far in the state.

“I salute the continuous efforts of Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and our frontline workers who are ensuring that our people get the best treatment across the health facilities in the state.

“No doubt, with a concerted efforts and determination to win this fight, we shall see the end of the virus. Do stay safe and stay blessed”, the federal lawmaker charged.
