Oriwu College Honoured With President’s Excellence Award As Best School In Nigeria

Mrs Adenike Adekanye, the Tutor – General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II (2nd right(and Alhaja Abiodun Sherry Ogunniyi, the immediate past Principal of Oriwu Senior Model College (right), under whose administration the school competed against other schools across the 36 states of the federation in August and won, receiving the award conferred on Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, as Best Secondary School In Nigeria on Monday.

It was yet another day of honour in Abuja for Oriwu Model College, the premier College in Ikorodu area of Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria , as it was honoured Oriwu College honoured with President’s Excellence Award As Best Public Senior Secondary School In Nigeria.

The award was presented during the 2020 World Teachers’ Day held at the Eagle Squares, FCT, Abuja, on Monday, October 5, 2020.

Mrs Adenike Adekanye, the Tutor – General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, and Alhaja Abiodun Sherry Ogunniyi, the immediate past Principal of Oriwu Senior Model College, under whose administration the school competed against other schools across the 36 states of the federation in August, received the award in Abuja.

They were joined by Hon Abike Dabiri Erewa CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora commission at the event also attended by the Hon. Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu attended the ceremony.

This year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Re-imagining the Future”, was marked with a limited number of participants in observance of the COVID-19 protocols.

According to report, the award for the best school is based on excellence, academic performance in external examinations – WASSCE, NECO, JAMB and tertiary school admission, conducive environment for learning, and awards of excellence won by the school, students and teachers.

Other criteria are school safety and guidance, co-currcular activities, parenting and mentoring of students, daily teaching and learning procedures and COVID -19 protocol compliance among others.

Oriwu College participated in the competition which started from the zonal level and moved to the District and then to State level where it emerged as the best in Lagos State to qualify for the national level of the competition where it competed with schools from other states of the federation.

Reacting to the feat, Mr Bello Akeem, the new Principal, Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu, thanked the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo – Olu for the support given to education and in particular to Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu.

He also appreciated the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo and the Tutor – General/Permanent Secretary, Mrs Adenike Adekanye, for their support and for ensuring that education in Lagos State is developing.

In the same vein, Alhaja Abiodun Sherry Ogunniyi, the immediate past Principal of Oriwu Senior Model College, also thanked the Governor, Commissioner for Education , TG/PS, and entire staff and students of Oriwu Model College for the achievements recorded under her administration.

Meanwhile, in his reaction to the award, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, a former Minister of Works and ex – student of Oriwu College Ikorodu, congratulated the school for the feat.

He also thanked the Governor of the state, Mr Babajide Sanwo – Olu, and former Principal of the school, Alhaja Serifat Ogunniyi for the national glory brought to the school.

“Congratulations to our amiable Principal, Mrs Abiodun Ogunniyi. God bless you for what you have done to place my alma MATA in such a high level. Thanks to the Governor of Lagos under whose administration this outstanding achievement was recorded. Thanks to all the staff of the College”, Sen Adeseye Ogunlewe wrote in his congratulatory message.
