A member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) State leaders, Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, has revealed that caucuses do more harm than good to political parties.

The old politician stated this during a session with selected youths and journalists in Ikorodu at his Igbogbo home on Friday, July 3, 2020, adding that caucuses have been used to destroy political parties.

While also stating that party members have abused the purpose for which caucuses are meant to serve, he added that members of the ruling party always go into elections divided.

“They are using caucuses to destroy politics. They are misusing caucuses. Caucus is only useful when you are contesting an election and you have your people together. Immediately after the election, you all go back to the party, but here, it is a permanent pillar”, he explained.

He said that the problem is not peculiar to Ikorodu but entire the state.

“It is all over the state and not only here (Ikorodu). That is why APC must work hard, because we always go into elections scattered.

“We should go into elections united so that our votes can be optimized, rather than anyone feeling that a mandate was taken from him or he’s annoyed that he wasn’t given the mandate”, the experienced politician said.

Basorun also called on the electorate in the Western region to change their attitudes towards elections if they want the region to remain relevant in the scheme of things.

“These days, you don’t get to see people on the voting queue by 1pm, whereas, before, people would still be in the queue by 3pm waiting to vote.

“See what is happening in the north, it is not inflated votes. Once the Village head delivers the message from the Emir through the District head to them that this is where they are going, they will all troop out to vote. That’s why you will see their women carrying their children on their back and holding other ones while waiting on the queue to vote.

“It is not the same thing here (Western part of the country). This is a general matter which everybody must face. It is very important that we must all be awake. There is no way we can get the position of the President, unless we get the north (to vote for our candidate)”, he said.
