Coronavirus: Ikorodu LG Commences Fumigation Of Markets, Public Places

The Ikorodu Local Government on Saturday, March 28, 2020, commence a council wide fumigation of all public places in order to keep the environment clean and ward off the emergency of the Coronavirus.

The Council Chairman, Hon. Wasiu Adesina, also declared the readiness of the council to comply and enforce tougher measures should the state government consider them necessary towards containing the spread of the deadly disease.

Also, Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), on Saturday (yesterday) late evening intensified action on the fumigation exercise across the council.

Officials of the Ikorodu Local government began the fumigation around 8am on Saturday at  the Sabo (Ayangbure) International Market as market women and men who had arrived to commence trading activities were locked out due to the exercise.

We gathered that the Health Department of the council had disinfected the market of rats in the evening of the previous day.

Hon. Adesina, while speaking with THE IMPACT at the Gberigbe market, stated that the fumigation exercise is in line with the directive of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“This is in compliance with the state government’s directive that every part of the state must be fumigated, hence our council is embarking on the exercise. We have been to the Sabo market in the morning and now, we are at Gberigbe market”, Adesina stated.

He stated that Ikorodu Local Government would be fumigating schools and other public places as part of measures to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.

“We are going to be fumigating public places, including markets, schools and others”, he said.

“We are also educating our people on sanitation, especially washing of hands before and after they embark of any task. It is important to always wash their hands.

“We have also directed that market leaders must ensure that their markets are constantly fumigated to ensure that we don’t have outbreak of diseases. Cleanliness is very important”, he warned.

Speaking on the compliance level in Ikorodu to the government’s directives concerning Coronavirus, the council boss, stated that residents have been following the directives.

He added that Ikorodu residents would also comply without any hesitation if the state government decides total lockdown to eradicate the deadly disease.

“The people of Ikorodu are complying with every directive and if the government think that total lockdown is the best way to deal with the epidemic, I am sure that they will also abide fully”, he stated.

“We all must support the government in getting rid of the disease completely before it gets out of hands.

“I expect residents of Ikorodu to continue to comply with the directives of the state government and maintain personal hygiene by washing their hands with soaps and water regularly”.

He stated that the council shall be distributing hand sanitizers to residents in Ikorodu, adding that the federal government and other bodies should support the state government in its effort to contain the disease.

“Very soon, the local government will be distributing hands sanitizers to the its residents.

“In this period of epidemic, federal government, individuals and corporate bodies should continue to support the Lagos State Government that is doing everything to get rid of the virus”, Hon. Adesina said.
