Adijat’s Killing: Hon, Agunbiade, Lawyers Set To Provide Legal Assistance For Bereaved Family

Ikorodu community is not handling the unfortunate incident of late Adijat Shakiru, who was allegedly killed on Monday, March 18, 2019, by a stray bullet  shot by a police Raider, with kid gloves.

Aside discussing the matter on the social media, particularly those related to Ikorodu, and demanding for justice, the community is also mobilizing support to give the bereaved family legal representation as plans are underway to press charges against the trigger happy officer to get justice.

At the fore front of this move is the Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly and the representative of the Ikorodu Constituency I, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade.

The lawmaker, who was recently re-elected for the fourth, visited the victim’s family on Wednesday, March 19, and assured them that justice would be done.

THE IMPACT also gathered that the lawmaker visited Imota Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the matter falls, the same day.

In his quest to fulfill the request of  Adijat’s mother, Mrs Janeth Anifowoshe, and the entire Akaun community for justice over the  killing of the  17 year-old girl, Hon. Agunbiade on Thursday, March 21, engaged the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikorodu Branch, on the matter while also commending the professional conduct of the Area N Commander of the Nigerian Police in Ijede and his men.

In a release on Thursday, which was signed by the ranking lawmaker, the lawyer turned politician stated that he has invited lawyers in Ikorodu to join him in getting justice for the victim and his family.

“I commend the crisis management efforts of the Area N Commander of the Nigeria Police, who today paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased in company of some respectable community leaders.

“That, not being enough to assuage the frailed nerves and battered emotions of the late Adijat’s family, today, I invited the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikorodu Branch, to join me in ensuring that the prosecution of the detained police man should not only be for justice for the society but also for the victim ( late Adijat ) and her family in consonace with the new sprit of administration of criminal justice Law in Lagos State”.

According to the release, it was stated that the NBA will officially communicate to the police its preparedness to provide the victim’s family with legal representation.

“Gladly, the NBA chairman Mr. Akinlade Bayo, has replied, assuring me that the Ikorodu NBA will from tomorrow, Friday 22nd March (today), communicate to the police its preparedness to provide legal representation for the deceased family and hold brief in the prosecution.

Hon Agunbiade, who still operates his legal chamber, also hinted that he will be joining the legal team that would be handling the matter.  

“I will also join the legal team that will serve pro bono. Thanks to the leadership of Ikorodu Branch of NBA”.

He expressed his gratitude to his constituents for their intervention in ensuring that justice is done.

“I thank you all for your genuine concern and I futher assure you of justice in this matter”.

Meanwhile, members of the Ikorodu Division Youths Movement are also contemplating providing the family with free legal representation.

Speaking with THE IMPACT on Thursday, the Coordinator of the group, Comrade Samson Bisiriyu, stated that the youths group is working on representing the deceased family with some of its members that are lawyers.

Also, as part of the group’s efforts in intervening in the matter, they will be visiting the family of the victim today (Friday) to commiserate with them and also inform them about their intention.

Comrade Bisiriyu also told our reporter that the team will also be visiting Area N Command, Ijede, over the matter.
