The representative of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Benson has assured that the Export (Prohibition) (Repeal) Act 2025, that is just being assented to by President Bola Tinubu, will be a boost for Nigerian farmers, agro – processing firms, and bring about economic growth in Nigeria.
The third term lawmaker who sponsored the law gave the assurance on Thursday while also commending President Tinubu for signing the bill into law.
The Export (Prohibition) (Repeal) Act 2025, which was assented to a few days ago officially removed restrictions on exporting certain goods to boost agricultural productivity, increase foreign exchange earnings, and enhance Nigeria’s global trade competitiveness. The law repeals outdated prohibitions, aiming to encourage farmers and agro-processors to expand operations.

”I warmly commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his vision and his assenting to the Export (Prohibition) (Repeal) Act, 2025, a landmark reform that will unlock new economic opportunities for Nigerian farmers and agro-processors.
“Nigeria is the largest producer of yam in the world, just as several other agricultural products, yet every year huge quantities are lost due to poor storage and limited processing capacity.
“The problem has never been that Nigeria exports too much – the real problem is that we waste far more than we export, ” Rep. Benson said.

He emphasised that the law will reduce post – harvest losses, expand markets for the farmers of the affected produce and add value to their produce.
”This new law, which I sponsored in the House of Representatives, will help reduce post-harvest losses, expand markets for farmers, encourage increased production and promote value addition in products like yam flour, frozen yam chips and other derivatives.
“More importantly, it will create jobs across the agricultural value chain, boost rural economies and increase Nigeria’s non-oil foreign exchange earnings. Countries like Ghana are already benefiting from yam exports. As the world’s leading producer, Nigeria must also fully take advantage of this opportunity.”

The lawmaker representing Ikorodu federal constituency, also assured that the bill that is meant to make farmers smile will also create more jobs.
”This legislation is pro-farmer, pro-jobs and pro-growth, and it strongly aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration of President Tinubu. Nigeria should never watch its agricultural abundance go to waste when it can be processed, exported, and turned into prosperity for our farmers and our nation.”
