Meet Asoro Olatunji, National Deputy President Hopeful of NYCN: A Thorough-Bred Comrade

Asoro, Abubakri Olatunji , sole candidate for the position of the national NYCN Deputy President

Asoro, Abubakri Olatunji is a Legal and Compliance Expert, Data Analyst, Youth Development Expert, Writer and Poet.

As a youth development expert, his activities made him one of the most referred Youth Leaders in the country, having served in various youth organizations such as Youth Assembly of Nigeria (Speaker), Lagos Community Youth Development Initiative (State Secretary), Law Student Association of National Open University of Nigeria, Lagos, among others. He is currently serving as the Vice Chairman (Lagos East) of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter.

Where he previously served as the Coordinator of National Youth Council of Nigeria Ikorodu West Local Branch, the organisation attracted and executed three fully-funded grants including Behavioral Changes by UNICEF through Society for Family Health, Local Government Accountability by BudgiT, and another by Peace First Initiative. These grants make NYCN Ikorodu West the only branch of NYCN that has executed the highest number of grant projects in the country. Under his leadership, indigent students have received more than 100 free JAMB forms, 100 school uniforms, and annual free JAMB Tutorial classes. He has facilitated over 50 direct and indirect jobs to young people as well as business loans and grants.

Beyond his sterling credentials as a youth advocate and development expert, Asoro is passionate about health. He joined the campaign against the disease in Lagos State in 2019 and has contributed directly and indirectly) to the survival of over 300 patients in the state. Damien Foundation, a sub recipient of the Global Fund Grant on TB, HIV and Malaria awarded him the Best Cough Officer in Lagos State in 2021. He also appears on all printed Public Services Announcements (PSA) materials produced by the state. He was a member of the state committee on Public Service Announcement (PSAs) which developed all PSAs used for the campaign.

As an undergraduate student of law, through his position as the Secretary of the Law Students Association, Lagos State Chapter, the NOUN bill was amended, it put institutional discrimination against National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) students to a halt, thereby opening more doors for access to education for young people. Other overhauls like Annual Dinner, Centralised Moot Court and so on were also introduced.

Asoro is also the President and member Board of Trustees of Tekwallahi Islamic Foundation, an organisation that has provided over Twenty Million (N20,000,000) in non-interest business support to members between 2014 and 2023, especially residents of Majidun/Ogolonto, one of the underserved communities in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. Professionally, Asoro works with one of the biggest start-up tech logistics companies in Nigeria -Gokada. He uses Data Analysis to monitor and renew fleet documentation and relate with relevant government agencies to ensure smooth operation. He has used his office to cut the company’s bogus cost on documentation, also reducing travel distance and physical contact of end users of the documents by ensuring they get it remotely. The company helps businesses take their goods to end users in the most reliable and time saving manner thereby breaking distance barriers, expanding market scope of businesses and helping to increase profits.

To further horn his skill in corporate governance, he became a student member of Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Asoro believes that Arbitration is the fastest route to justice for commercial disputes in Nigeria and Africa and became a qualified Arbitrator and Associate Member of Nigeria Institute of Chartered Arbitrators in 2022. He is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Law at the National Open University of Nigeria.

In the past years, Asoro has garnered numerous awards for his contributions toward advancing developments during his service at various youth and student bodies.

He was born in Majidun Ogolonto community in Ikorodu, Lagos in 1992.

In his spare time, he enjoys writing articles and poems on public issues.

He is running unopposed as the Deputy President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria.
