My Bill On Abolition Of Capital Punishment For Pregnant Women Affirms Our Collective Humanity – Rep. Benson

The representative of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Benson, has stated that his sponsored bill on the Abolition of Capital Punishment for Pregnant Women is not just about reforming punitive measures, rather, it is one that affirms our collective humanity.

Rep. Benson who is the Lagos State representative on House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendment, also emphasises the bill recognises the sanctity of life.

He spoke about the bill’s provision on his social media handles.

The bill which drew deep and thoughtful engagement from stakeholders at the National Public Hearing as part of the ongoing Constitutional Review at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja on Monday was among the ones many stakeholders engaged during the hearing.

“The House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendment – on which I proudly serve as the Lagos State representative – held its National Public Hearing as part of the ongoing Constitutional Review.

“Public Hearings are the beating heart of the legislative process. They give citizens a voice, ensure inclusivity, and strengthen the sense of ownership of the Constitution that governs us. This is democracy in action – open, participatory, and people-driven.

“One of the Bills that drew deep and thoughtful engagement from stakeholders was the proposal on the Abolition of Capital Punishment for Pregnant Women which I sponsored.

“This Bill is not just about reforming punitive measures; it is about affirming our collective humanity. It recognises the sanctity of life, the unique vulnerability of women in such circumstances and the unborn child who should not bear the weight of another’s crime.

“Its spirit aligns with global best practices and reflects our moral responsibility as a society that values justice tempered with compassion,” the lawmaker elaborated.

Stakeholders at the Public Hearing also considered Inclusive Governance, Judicial Reforms, Security and Policing, Devolution of Powers, Strengthening of Institutions, Fiscal reforms, Traditional institutions, Citizenship and Indigene-ship, Fundamental Human Rights, Local Government Reforms and States and LG Creation.

Rep. Benson said that the hearing has further strengthened people’s oriented constitutional reforms.

“The robust contributions from across the country have further strengthened the case for such people-oriented reforms that enhance justice, security, representation, and good governance.

“As we move forward in this process, I remain steadfast in advocating for constitutional amendments that embody the hopes of my constituents and the aspirations of Nigerians across the federation. Together, we can build a Nigeria that is more inclusive, more secure and more just.”
