Lawmaker Representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency Calls For Employment Of More Teachers, Honour For Best Teacher In Nigeria

The lawmaker representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Babajimi Benson , has called on the Federal Government to employ more teachers in the country while also enjoining the House of Representatives to always honour any teacher that emerge Best Teacher in the country.

This was contained in a motion moved by the two-term lawmaker on Thursday, October 10, 2019, in commemoration of World Teachers Day.

The motion is titled, “Motion for the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day (WTD) or International Teachers’ Day – Celebrating Nigerian Teachers”.

Posting on his social media walls including Facebook, Instagram and others, Hon. Babajimi Benson, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Defense, wrote:

“Today, I moved a motion as part of the commemoration of World Teachers Day and celebration of Nigerian Teachers where Mrs Agnes Elusakin of Oriwu College, Ikorodu, Mrs Anike Adekanye, Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District 2 as well as Mrs Ogunniyi A.S, Principal, Oriwu Model Senior College, Ikorodu, were honoured by the Rt. Honourable Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and members of the House.

The motion seeks to:

“Mandate the House to recognize and honour the Best Teacher and Best Principal in Nigeria as a sign of appreciation and to show support to the teachers for their selfless sacrifice towards societal development.

 “Urge the Federal Government to improve on welfare and support schemes for teachers, especially in the area of training, using the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) approach in addressing education policy and curriculum choices in schools in order to improve competitiveness in science and technology development .

In addition, the motion also seeks to:

 “Urge the FG to employ more teachers to address the issue of inadequate staffing and low productivity within the education sector.

 “Urge the FG to increase budgetary allocation to the Education sector in the 2020 appropriation bill so as to equip our teachers with the requisite training and adequate facilities in our schools; and

“Mandate the House Committees on Education, Universal Basic Education, Legislative Compliance to ensure the prayers in this motion reflect in the 2020 Appropriation Bill”.

Alhaja Abiodun Ogunniyi the Principal, Oriwu Senior Model College won same award in 2015.
